MV : "Wittalai lhai jai" by Vit Hyper (alternative MV)

Love this song! I don't like this version of the MV as much as the other one but... well its still the same great song!

Sunday 30 December 2007

CD : Vit Hyper - wid chanid pised

Vit, of Thai rock group Hyper (hence the name), released a new solo country rock album earlier this year, headed by the fantastic song "wittalai lhai jai" which was one of our favourite songs of the year (actually it was #2) and also had a great MV (pic from which is below). The song has an infectious melody and a great chorus driven by Vit's low smooth vocals.

That wasn't the only highlight, "kuen nee mai glub" is among the other great tracks on here, its a very well crafted album and Vit is another guy who looks great with dreadlocks.

MV : "Toh hah nae tur" by Tai Orratai

Tai Orratai's latest CD has just come out and we have ordered it already, until it arrives lets enjoy this Tai "oldie"...

Best of 2007 (3) : Top 5 CDs

And finally in our review of the year here are our top 5 favourite CDs of the year.

1) Various - Duay ruk dae kroo salah

What a great collection of songs by Grammy's female luktung singers! There is Tai Orratai with her fabulous "Khor kae roo kao" and Praewa Patcharee's "Jeb tee tong jai" plus other great songs from the likes of Takkatan Cholada and Ratchanok Srilophan.

1 - duay ruk dae kroo salah

2) Takkatan Cholada - tanon kon fun

So many wonderful songs on this album, her second. It includes the fantastic Mai chai fan tum taen mai dai, one of the best songs i heard all year.

3 - takkatan tanon kon fun

3) Prik Wharn - fan nai fhun

Best song this year was "Chai kon raek" by Prik Wharn, a sledgehammer of a country torch ballad, sung by a young lady who appears to like strumming her guitar in an armchair placed in a field. Rest of the album isn't bad either.

4 - prik fan nai fhun

4) Tai Orratai - pasa ruk jark dokyah

Tai Orratai, whose voice has the ability to take you away from current reality and transport you into a world of woe, lost love, sacrifice and dancing for coin.

5 - tai pasa ruk jark dokyah

5) Sear Napat - kum diew tee kao jai

Sear has a great voice and has an album full of powerful country ballads here.

6 - sear kum diew tee kao jai

Others we liked...

Best of 2007 (1) : Top 5 Music Videos

These, in our opinion, are the top 5 music videos in Thai lukthung this year.

1) Kratae - perd jai sao tae

How can it be any other video really? Kick boxing on an underground train? Excellent! The choreography of the dancing and fighting matches the music perfectly.

2) Takkatan Cholada - mai chai fan tum taen mai dai

Takkatan Cholada

This video really tugs the heart strings, she thinks the guy she loves loves her too, she runs up the stairs to see him... but the guy has got back with his ex. Heartbreak!

3) Tai Orratai - kho khae ru khaow

Tai Orratai - kho khae ru khaow

Always loved this video both for the triple view of Tai and the sequence when Tai switches places with the girl to sing to that dumb dude.

4) Ajareeya Bussada - ploi pai tung jai ruk

Ajareeya Bussada - ploi pai tung jai ruk

The bit where the guy reaches up to Leew and she thinks he loves her again but then he just adjusts her hair. The expression on Leew's face... well its true heartbreak!

5) Pee Saderd - jee hoi

Pee Saderd - jee hoi

Fantastic dancing girls and magical weirdness going on. Job done!

CD : Janet Kiew - thank you tee ruk

We like Janet Kiew, with her less-than-smooth voice and sassy image you can tell she has "lived a bit". This album is a great fusion of rock and other western music with lukthung. Such as on the title track opener, a fast song that brings in various elements to produce a great dance song. Following on it the straight power ballad "Kid wah hai mhar mun gin", a kind of song Janet's voice really suits.

One of the best examples of the fusion is "Rorb nee jud hai kon nah tar dee" which starts off with razor-sharp rock guitars, switches to lukthung and then into a rap! Totally excellent.

Sear Napat is one of our favourite new artists this year, this is a song off her excellent debut album.

MV : "Hua jai muk ngai" by Pee Saderd

Love the tempo changes in this song!

CD : Morgan - self-titled

Morgan's debut album from late last year, and how cool they look especially the singer with his dreadlocks! This is a good hard country rock album and starts off with the excellent power ballad "roob chua tua dum" with it's organ backed chorus that really puts a shiver down your spine. Another highlight is the next track, the driving rocker "tum prue dee" with it's rousing chorus and hard edged guitars.

Another song we liked later on in the album is "ruk dean" and there are a number of other good tracks. This is a recommended album.

MV : "Sob tar" by A Tattakorn & Mai Saowapar

Whatever happened to Mai Saowapar? I liked her debut (which i will review at some stage) from late 2005, but no full album since. She did do a couple of tracks on some RS compilations this year of which this is one...

Friday 7 December 2007

MV : "Sorn tai hua jai" by Suchada

A great song off Suchada's album.

CD : Suchada - aok huk rueng khum khum

Former beauty queen (i'm sure i read that somewhere!) Suchada released this, her debut last year on RS. It starts off with the great title track, like a number of songs on here its a well sung lukthung song with rock influences. Similarly "mai pra dub" and "kluen tai narm". These songs are great examples of country rock. Driving rhythms and powerful hooks. "Sorn tai hua jai" is a faster paced song with a great chorus.

As well Suchada sings some more lukthung-ish songs and these also are very well done. Suchada has a really nice clear voice. This is a very good album.

MV : "Mai pluem" by Kratae

She is a great dancer! And that pink glove keeps swapping sides doesn't it?

CD : Jintara Poonlap - mor lum sa orn 5

Lets go back a few years to one of Jintara Poonlap's older albums. This was the first mor lum album i ever got and i have recently been listening to it again a lot. Its a great album that starts off with the terrific "Nam tha yard kang pra tard na koon" with it's superb organ and infectious energy. Thats just one of a number of great morlum tracks on here. Jintara is in great voice as always.

Our second favourite track however takes us into lukthung territory, "Koo dee pilchai" is a great slow song with superb backing including lots of deep saxophone.

The band Stamp produce some good songs and good videos, here is one.

CD : Tai Orratai - pasa ruk jark dokyah

Before we go further we had better admit that Tai Orratai is our favourite singer but we will try and be unbiased. This album is brilliant anyway, bias or no bias! Released earlier this year this is Tai's latest album. It contains a number of wondefully sad and romantic lukthung songs starting with the opening track "kaew ror phee" and the heart warming "tueng dunk yung huang mae" where Tai tells us that even if she becomes famous she still thinks of her Mom... ahhh. Tai's voice is as good as always, she has an uncanny ability to take you away on an emotional journey as you listen to her sing... or something like that.

That is not to say the album is perfect, its a bit one paced, though thats probably because Tai's voice is not that suited to faster songs. The only real fast song is "sao rum wong" but even in the MV for that one Tai still looks miserable. But then again Tai manages to put her emotion into her songs wonderfully well so why not continue in that vein, though a bit more variety would be good. Lets hope Tai can smile a bit more on future albums!

Lots of phones in this MV by the lovely Jukkajun, i wish she would phone me.

MV : "Been hao" by Karaked

Time for a video by the fantastic Karaked. But then its always time for a video by Karaked...

CD : Jintara Poonlap - sao thong dok jarn

The Queen of Morlum Jintara Poonlap has just released her first CD for R-Siam but this is her previous studio album. The album starts off quite understated with the title track and the following track not really setting the world alight. But then "somchai 2007", oh what a song this is! Great fast morlum song, but i still think it sounds like an MC Hammer tune.

The rest of the album is pretty good with some more decent morlum songs and some more lower tracks moving into lukthung territory. The album is a good album that is enjoyable in it's entirety but without having that many standout songs.

MV : "Jorng tuk luang nah" by Praewa Patcharee

A cute little song and a cute little MV by a cute little singer.

CD : Luang Kai - ruk lhao ruk diew

Luang Kai's third album then, much of the attention centred around the superb song "Korb kun tee ruk gun", an emotional rock-edged ballad. The rest of the album isn't bad either and overall very rock flavoured such as the on the fast rocker "Dek win dek waen" or "Krung sood tai" with it's tasty guitar solos.

We are back into more normal loog thung territory with songs like "Motorcycle man" however. The album has a nice mix of styles with good music and of course is well sung by the popular Luang Kai.

MV : "Ploi pai tung jai ruk" by Ajareeya Bussada

How sweet Ajareeya looks in this MV, and what a sad song! A new album from her must be due soon, its now just over a year since the last one.

MV : "Jee hoi" by Pee Saderd

I like this video, the dancing girls in the background are great! Pee Saderd is also my hairstyle role model.

CD/MV : Kratae - perd jai sao tae

We first came across Kratae earlier this year when we saw her cool underground train / kick boxing pop video (see below) for the title track of her album "perd jai sao tae" on MV3. This is truly one of the better fast songs of the year and one of the best MVs.

The CD's problem is that the rest of it doesn't come close to the brilliance of that song. "Mai mee mue tue" is a decent enough slower tune though her singing isn't really good enough to really stand out. So in summary, track 2 is exceptional, the rest is just about competent.

Rating : 7/10 (mostly for the title track)

CD : Prik Wharn - fan nai fhun

This is a CD we got earlier this year but this blog didn't exist then to review it and it is one of the best CDs of the year so why not... Prik Wharn's debut then and what a fabulous country album this is. "Chai kon raek" is our favourite track, a powerful country ballad delivered with powerful and sharp vocals and a terrific chorus and hook.

The rest of the album doesn't quite reach those heights again but comes close a few times, songs like "OK huk pee 2" are simply compelling listening and again superb country songs. The faster tracks are maybe a bit less than brilliant however. They are still worth listening to though as is every song on the CD. Truly this is one of the best CDs for a long time.

CD : Takkatan Cholada - tanon kon fun

You know how it is sometimes, you get something but don't quite appreciate it's brilliance immediately. It was like that with this CD, we got it a few months ago and liked it but didn't quite appreciate how good it is. So lets readdress the balance. This is Takkatan Cholada's second album and she is following in her labelmate Tai Orratai's footsteps squeezing every bit of emotion out of powerful loogthung songs.

I think Takkatan is a little better than Tai on faster paced tracks though like the wonderfully jolly Ji ruk ru ji lork and the bouncey Khon sode prajum concert with it's crowd noises. But where Takkatan really shines is on slow powerful songs like Plai tarng kong kwam kid tung and Mai chai fan tum taen mai dai. These songs show off Takkatan's amazing vocals to the max.

This is one of the contenders for CD of 2007 (or 2550 if you prefer.) Tracks 2 to 5 are one of the most amazing sequences of songs you will hear for a long time, and the rest of the album isn't bad either!

MV : "Ji ruk ru ji lork" by Takkatan Cholada

Oh Takkatan, what a fantastic voice you have! This is off her current album which we are loving so much here. A nice faster paced song.

MV : "Yark sun nai aom kord ai" by Karaked

Dear Karaked on one of the songs off her lovely first CD.

CD : Prame Preeyagorn - ngao boh mee wun yhood

This is Prame Preeyagorn's debut album though the R-Siam artist has released a couple of songs already on a compilation earlier this year (though both songs on that CD, Ruam Dao Roong Esarn are on this CD too).

Bottom line : this is a great debut. Prame has a really rich voice and takes on these songs really well. Songs like the title track and "Sood huk porn porn" sound really great with her lovely voice accompanied by a perfectly judged backing.

The singing is good, the backing is catchy and smooth (and even includes a bit of sequencer action later on) overall this is a great piece of loog thung.

9) jeb nee mai mee wun - TAKKATAN CHOLADA
10) koo dee pilchai - JINTARA POONLAP

MV : "Khob koon tee yung ruk kun" - Luang Kai

We really like this song by Luang Kai, that is on his new album. It has a real epic feel to it, especially the version of the MV that uses footage from a movie. This is the other version though.

CD : Joom Chanida - huk koy ploi khao

This is a debut from a new singer. Joom Chanida has a slightly strange voice when she sings, her voice sounds nice and warm though it also sounds a little... odd. The effect is not unpleasant incidentally, we enjoyed this CD a lot. The songs are good and usually jolly and light-hearted, with an accordion led backing.

Huk koy ploi khao (track 1) is a case in point, it chugs along happily with Joom's interesting vocals throughout and when it ends you just want to listen to it again. Superb debut.

MV : "Nhoo ror poh yok" by Mint Nicha Makharmwharn

Mint is a great new artist, we love her debut album and her videos. Obviously she is very young and cute, that helps a lot.

CD : Ar Lek - kum sabarn

Ar Lek looks cool with his long hair, and his second album starts off with the rocky title track, now this is a great song. Actually you would imagine the rest of the album would continue in this vein but it doesn't. The rest of the album is generally softer with the guitars turned down a bit. Some great music on here though, just put it on and dance away.

MV : "Kho khae ru khaow" by Tai Orrathai

CD : Mhiew Kunatarn - bon kae buer

This is a new morlum album by a singer we never heard of before but we like it a lot... well some of it anyway. The first track, the title track, is fine pacey morlum but then we get to track 2 "Birthday naew naew". I think we can live without a morlum version of happy birthday. The track really does step the tightrope between being dreadful and inspired and maybe is a little too gimmickry.

Fear not because the next track, the slow loogthung-ish "Kuen fan hai khao" is excellent. With interesting instrumentation such as some really harsh 80s synths and cool guitar. The rest of the album bops along and has an interesting variety of songs, the singing isn't bad. Overall this is a pretty good effort.

MV : "Wittalai lhai jai" by Vit Hyper

The quality is not very good on this one, it looks like it was recorded off the TV. But this is our current favourite song anyway. Vit is from the group Hyper of course and this is his solo work.

Saturday 27 October 2007

CD : Bew Kalayanee - pieng soang rao

This is Bew Kalayanee's second album, the first was "nobra nora" of course which was a great song though overall we were not that keen on her debut, it was good but could have been better. So on to her second album then, this has the Nescafe tie-in "pieng soang rao" (the MV of which has oh so subtle product placement, no we are being really sarcastic). The song is great though, Bew has upped the rock a bit on this album.

We like this album more, it is a little more assured and powerful. And is positively joyful on the pacey "nah ruk nuk lah" that rocks along with some tasty guitar. She is at her best though on the slower songs like "loog khong poh" where her rich voice can really be showcased. We await album #3 with interest.

CD : Duay Ruk Dae Kroo Sa-Lah

This is a compilation album showcasing Grammy's female loogthung and on evidence of this they have a good selection of artists. Track 1 is by Tai Orratai and as you would expect "Khor kae roo kao" is a fantastic song, actually its one of the best we have yet heard Tai done in our opinion. The MV is also great, especially when Tai appears on the screen 3 times. The song is so heart-felt too. Tai has an uncanny way of packing emotion into a song.

Another highlight is Praewa Patcharee's "Jeb tee tong jai" (MV link), how can you resist a song where the singer stands on a giant flower? We really like the way Praewa looks genuinely depressed as she is singing.

Jakkajan Wanwisah also scores well with "Kued hord boh jing", to be honest her recent album didn't set our world alight but we will revisit it again after hearing this song. Ratchanok Srilophan and Tuktan Chollada also have good songs on this album (and great MVs too). There arn't really any weak songs on this album, maybe Earn's fast song was a bit so-so. Actually the fast songs (which arn't many on here anyway) are a bit average but that doesn't detract much more the fact the songs on here are fantastic.

CD : Nui Suweenar - Fah Kwarng Klang Krung

Nui Suweenar's debut album and on this evidence she should be making a few more albums at least. Nhai wah jah mai jai aorn is a wonderful song, a slow dramatic soaring ballad drenched in organ, a bit like Procul Harem only totally different.

Some of the uptempo songs are a bit terrifying though and the album doesn't match up to the brilliance of the above song. Nui's voice is nice and rich and very listenable. The album is worth it alone for the above song, though some of the others arn't bad either, only maybe not great either.

MV : "Pee srao kao luem" by Ajareeya Bussaba

We love Ajareeya Bussada, so much so that if one day we has a daughter we will call her Ajareeya. Usually she does fast dancey songs but here is a slow song from one of her earlier albums. Actually its nearly a year since her last album so we are eagerly awaiting the new one!

MV : "Somchai 2007" by Jintara Poonlap

Is it just our imagination or does this Jintara song sound like it has the same tune as MC Hammer's "U Can't Touch This"?!

CD : Golf Sirikwan - dancer poo torn

This is the debut album from Golf Sirikwan, an exciting new loog thung singer, and very good it is too. From the off the album takes you into an energy packed new world. There are whistles! There are yelps! There are bells! There are horns! And that was just track 1 (the title track)! Actually "dancer poo torn" is a very good song and the perfect statement of intent.

Following on from that is the more restrained but no less wonderful "Poo chai jai rai".

In fact the rest of the album is very good too, i listened to it waiting for a duff track. None came.

CD : Sear Napat - kum diew tee kao jai

You can tell Sear Napat is the real thing just by looking at the cover of the CD, sat there with her guitar she just looks "real artist" and thankfully the substance is on the disk too. Sear's voice is wonderful : rich, deep and warm. The music terrific ballads such as the title track "kum diew tee kao jai" and the exceptional song "chun mai dai ngoe" with it's killer pop hook and emotionally charged chorus. The whole world should hear that song.

Really it cannot be given justice in mere words, this album is so good it transcends mere written language. Sear's voice washes over you like an aural waterfall. So what a debut.

CD : Mint Nicha Makharmwharn - poo tai

Mint is a new singer and very very lovely she looks too, perfect in every way... oh wait this is supposed to be a music review. So what is her debut album like? Its not bad at all, her voice is a little weedy sometimes maybe but the music bounces along in a very infectious manner and the overall effect is good both on high tempo tracks like the title track and the wonderful "Chat wab" and slower numbers like Message kon ngao.

So she looks great and the music isn't bad at all. A great debut.

Welcome to Thai Country Music Blog

Welcome to this blog, which is dedicated to Thai country music - lukthung, morlam and music for life.

What is that then?

Luk thung "child of the field" is the true pop music of Thailand, for a long time it was under the shadow of westernised pop but in recent years has seen a resurgence in popularity and cross-fertilisation with the harder dancier music morlam from the north east of Thailand.

What is on this blog?

Lots of music videos, also CD/VCD reviews, our charts, pics. We hope you like it. If so please link to us!
