Now for something a little different. Usually, as i live in the West, i have to get my lukthung CDs online but i was just happening to be browsing the shelves of a CD store here when i saw the magic words on the CD cover "lukthung and morlam". So this is a "world music" compilation on the music of Thailand though most of the songs are lukthung and morlam there is a Thai pop song here and a few oddities like an Elephant Orchestra (?!)
The lukthung is a little old but good,
Jeab Benjaporn's "
Ma kor tho tai" is one of her earlier songs and is an excellent example of lukthung, though not as good as some of her more recent work.
Sao Somparn also scores highly with her "
Katikar huajai". Maybe the best songs are some of the grittier morlam tracks here such as
Man Motorgai's "
Hae nang maew" and
Pol Pan Lao's "
Amazing Issan".
If you want an introduction to Thai country music this is a pretty good collection of tracks, though the absence of
Jintara Poonlap is unforgivable though i am biased. If you want to check out a few older tracks this is worth checking out too.

Last year Jintara moved to R-Siam and this is her first CD for them. It starts off with a great morlum track "Jintara ab baew" featuring Eed Pong Larng Sa-orn which in many way acts as a relaunch of Jintara ready for this new phase of her long career. I prefer the following track however "Tanakarn narm tar" with it's slow and brooding beat moving into mid-tempo. Jintara's vocals ring out like a bright beacon as always.
For a change some Lao lukthung/morlam and this artist, Mekkara Sabaphone, from Lao Art Media. Lets start with "pid huk pid hai" which is an enjoyable fast paced song with lots of organ motifs. Mekkara has a nice tone to her voice and handles the fast singing well. A better song though is "koy gam lang jai" which is a lovely slow song with sweet instrumentation and a sweeping beat. Mekkara again handles the song well and has a pleasing tone to her voice.

A debut, and the pretty Film Narinthip starts it off with the terrific and energetic "Pee mai lhub nong mai lhub". A very good luk thung dance song, the video has some good dancing too. There is a rockish edge to the song and thats common throughout much of the album. "Ter tao nun" for example is a good rock ballad.
